The Moving Finger Writes
and having Writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety
nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel
half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out
a Word of it.

poem by Omar Khayyam

Simple or complex, the expressive written word stays with us forever!

HOW TO WRITE A GOOD PAPER:

FOCUS: Many writer's neglect the most important emphasis in a sentence. A term paper for instance, should form the writers key argument strongly. Normally one or two sentences long in a thesis should sum up the major issue.

DO NOT OVERLOAD: Every sentence in the body of a term paper should back up the writers thesis. Extraneous information only distracts readers from the main points. Stay on message and refrain from providing information that does not directly support the thesis.

REPETITION: Can be boring. Be careful not to stretch the same ideas over and over again. Make sure that each paragraph contains a new idea that modifies the thesis.

STRUCTURE: A term paper needs a beginning, a middle and an end. Think out the structure before jumping into it. Highlight each section with major arguments and state briefly the evidence that will justify each statement. Make the reader think, and even question your argument intelligently.

TRANSITIONAL PHRASES: Don't get lost, which can cause disinterest in your reader. Remember the beginning, the middle and the end? Use words like"therefore"and "finally" to keep your reader on track.

PUNCTUATION: This is a tough one as there are differences of opinion. Think of it like a traffic light, when to hesitate, when to stop, and when to go.

SPELLING ERRORS: No excuse for that, use spell check and a good proof reader.

IN CONCLUSION: Recap the major points and arguments of the thesis. Make it lively by ending with a question mark on something not proven or under review. This will encourage the reader to 'engage brain'.

Writing is an art, it takes thought and practice and can be tremendous fun. You know the old adage "the printed word is worth a thousand pictures". Just like that book you are reading and cannot put down.
